Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities issued security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
