Jurgen Klopp says a return to lead Liverpool is conceivable.
The German coach, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, remarked that a future comeback is something that could happen. Klopp, after a transformative nine-year spell which brought Champions League success and the Premier League crown since 1990, currently occupies positions in a global football capacity for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
They secured the league title in the previous campaign, yet numerous supporters holding him in high esteem would embrace the possibility that he might come back one day. During an extensive chat, he shared with the podcast host: “I said I will never coach another team on English soil. So that means if then it’s Liverpool...absolutely. It's plausible.”
“I’m 58, which suggests I could make the decision in a few years, who knows. Must I choose now? Then I will not coach again. But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I'll wait and observe what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Questioned regarding what circumstances must arise to draw him back to the dugout, he revealed he feels no immediate pull to such a return. “I'm not entirely sure, I love what I do right now,” he commented. “I don't crave being a coach; I avoid standing in the rain through long matches; I don’t miss going to press conferences four times, three times a week or constant media duties each week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area as a dressing room, but sitting in a restaurant with the team having a nice chat, is pleasant. Success was frequent meaning regularly positive atmosphere around the place. I can still hear the captain's chuckle ringing in my ears to illustrate.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended regarding Arne Slot, acknowledging his role for the adjustments that won the league last term. They've been defeated a string of losses across various tournaments following significant transfers, though he denied the notion it could be a decline.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker in Flo[rian] Wirtz, doubters will be silenced if you use the wrong words. He’s an incredible talent. [Hugo] Ekitike, incredible player. It’s a really good balanced team. Fans shouldn't fret over the club, they'll bounce back.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of Jota, whom he brought in during his tenure, and the effect at the club. The forward was killed in a car crash alongside his brother in July.
“Who can fill the void of somebody like Diogo? It’s not about the player himself, it's his character. I struggle to conceive the dressing room without him in it. I find it difficult to discuss about it. A devastating blow for all the boys too. Nobody at Liverpool would cite it as an excuse but it is the situation. You walk in a dressing room which he filled completely. Coping with it on a personal level is difficult. Overwhelming.”
