Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Uninterrupted Energy Deliveries to India in Defiance of US Demands

During a defiant message to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to provide “uninterrupted” shipments of crude oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and asserted their relationship were “immune to external pressure.”

A Signal Aimed at the United States

The statement, made on Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at Washington, that have repeatedly attempted to urge New Delhi into reducing its longstanding ties with Moscow. The backdrop follows earlier Washington's moves, such as the imposition of trade penalties on India over its purchase of Moscow's energy exports.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy exporter of energy resources and everything required for the advancement of India’s economy,” Putin said. “We are ready to keep ensuring the uninterrupted flow of energy for the booming Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, though he did not naming energy explicitly, supported the theme by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a strong and vital pillar of the India-Russia cooperation.”

Defying US Interference

Before the summit, in a TV appearance, Putin had criticized US interference regarding India's oil imports. The president questioned, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India claim the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival represented his maiden trip to India after the beginning of the situation in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi undertook a deliberate effort to project that the personal rapport between the heads of state remained intact.

A Warm Welcome

In a rare move, Prime Minister Modi met Putin as he disembarked. They shared a warm hug like close allies before enjoying a private dinner the night before the summit.

Modi in his statement called India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “founded on reciprocal esteem and deep trust.”

Expanding Strategic Cooperation

The bilateral summit resulted in multiple key agreements in the fields of military and economic cooperation. A major outcome was the finalization of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which targets to double bilateral trade to $100bn annually by the end of the decade.

Furthermore agreed to reshape their strategic cooperation. Although Russia remains India's largest source of arms, the volume has declined over the past decade as India aims to widen its procurement.

The joint statement emphasized cooperation in the joint production of cutting-edge weapons platforms, although direct reference of purchases such as the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

In conclusion, both nations restated that during the “ongoing challenging, difficult, and volatile global landscape, their relationship stay durable to external pressure.”
