The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
