The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
