Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial European tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Is His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
